Referential and general calls in primate semantics

چکیده
In recent years, the methods of formal semantics and pragmatics have been fruitfully applied to analysis primate communication systems. Most analyses therein appeal a division labor between which has following three features: (F1) calls are given referential meanings (they provide information about world rather than just an action be taken), (F2) some general meaning, (F3) in context enriched by competition with more informative calls, along lines scalar implicatures. this paper, we develop highly simplified models independently assess conditions under such features would emerge. After identifying sufficient condition for (F1), find range not evolutionarily stable, discuss consequences both modeling empirical work.

متن کاملAlgebraic Logic : Referential Algebraic Semantics
Wójcicki has provided a characterization of selfextensional logics as those that can be endowed with a complete local referential semantics. His result was extended by Jansana and Palmigiano, who developed a duality between the category of reduced congruential atlases and that of reduced referential algebras over a fixed similarity type. This duality restricts to one between reduced atlas model...
متن کاملPrimate copulation calls and postcopulatory female choice
Females in some species of Old World monkeys and apes vocalize after copulation, but the function of these vocalizations is not clear. In this article, we examine the hypothesis that copulation calls are a form of postcopulatory female choice. According to this hypothesis, copulation calls are honest signals of fertility (i.e., ovulation) that are used by females to encourage mate guarding by t...
متن کاملMaking Use of Similarity in Referential Semantics
Similarity is well-known to be a core concept of human cognition, e.g., in categorization and learning. Therefore, expressions of similarity in natural language are of special interest: How to account for their meaning including the results on similarity in Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence without abandoning referential semantics? In this paper we will lay out a framework connectin...
متن کاملHornbills can distinguish between primate alarm calls.
Some mammals distinguish between and respond appropriately to the alarm calls of other mammal and bird species. However, the ability of birds to distinguish between mammal alarm calls has not been investigated. Diana monkeys (Cercopithecus diana) produce different alarm calls to two predators: crowned eagles (Stephanoaetus coronatus) and leopards (Panthera pardus). Yellow-casqued hornbills (Cer...
